BACKGROUND
Your task is to create a concept design package in response to the Request
for Proposal. This is not a full design set, rather a conceptual proposal.
The site is the Santa Fe Depot in downtown, a San Diego Historic Landmark. Originally built to
accommodate visitors to the Panama-California Exposition, the train station has been in operation
since 1915. The owner, Santa Fe Depot, Inc., wishes to modernize the amenities at the station and
expand the food service while respecting and maintaining elements of the historic architecture.
You may continue to work in your mock firm from Assignment #1 or regroup, however, you must
work in a group of 2 to 4 people for this assignment.
PROJECT PROGRAM
– Improved check-in counter/ticket office
– Information booth that is more integrated and inviting
– Modernized restaurant with indoor & outdoor seating for up to 50 patrons.
o Take into consideration: security for the restaurant after its business hours, option
for grab-and-go food and drinks, and access to kitchen.
– The following items must remain from the existing station:
o The wooden benches may change location/orientation but the total number of
benches must remain the same.
o The exterior walls and existing vaulted ceiling in the Waiting Room shall not be
touched.
o The decorative wall tile must be preserved as much as possible.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Research and analysis should be presented graphically in your proposal through diagrams, case
studies/precedent, spatial planning & site analysis.
– Create a PDF presentation for your proposal including the following:
Firm name & logo
Team member names & roles
List of consultants needed (research local firms)
Project schedule (starting November 2024; move-in date is July 2026)
Billing rates & schedule (to be covered in Lecture 03).
Concept board (precedent / inspiration images, may be collaged to show ideas on color
scheme, finishes, furniture, products, etc.)
